Essential Job Duties

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University invites applicants for a 9-month, professional track faculty position as an Assistant Teaching Professor in Environmental Sciences with expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and geospatial analytics, urban sustainability, green infrastructure, and/or open space. This position is 75% teaching and mentoring and 25% service. Teaching responsibilities include teaching 15 credit hours per year, including online or face-to-face courses. Service responsibilities (25%) include GIS consulting for undergraduate and graduate students, serving on programmatic committees, and may include advising or mentoring graduate students. This is a permanent, full-time position, with an initial two-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Teaching and Mentoring Responsibilities
The candidate will teach at least one section of FOR 353 GIS and Remote Sensing for Environmental Analysis and Assessment. They could either teach additional sections of FOR 353 or develop and offer a new GIS and Remote Sensing course that serves non-forestry majors within FER.

The candidate will also develop an undergraduate ES course in urban sustainability, green infrastructure, open space, and/or urban forestry that will appeal to a variety of ES focal areas. In addition, this position will potentially develop a new graduate course on a topic relevant to the CNR certificate in the Pappas RED program, such as sustainable design, urban planning, net-zero buildings, or community planning. The position will have the opportunity to serve on graduate committees and advise graduate students.

The candidate will serve as a GIS consultant to undergraduate and graduate students working on projects with a spatial data component, including ES 400 capstone projects. In addition, the candidate will mentor at least 1 ES capstone student group per academic year on a semester-long team-based project with a focus on urban forestry or urban ecosystems.

Service Responsibilities
The candidate will serve as a liaison to the Library’s spatial data librarian. In addition, the candidate will serve on committees (at the department, college, and university levels); engage with students through student organizations, undergraduate research, or other extracurricular activities; and participate in professional society activities.

Other Responsibilities

The candidate will have opportunities to participate in technical meetings, research conferences, and professional development activities.

Minimum Education and Experience

The successful candidate should hold a master’s degree for the rank of Lecturer, a master’s degree plus 5 years of relevant teaching experience for the rank of Senior Lecturer, and a doctoral degree for the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in the field of environmental sciences, geospatial analytics, natural resources, forestry or other related field.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency using geospatial tools for environmental applications, including Esri and Open Source products (e.g., AGOL, ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, QGIS, GRASS GIS, R) in teaching and research settings.
  • Proficiency with enterprise or advanced spatial database environments (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle) and cloud computing environments (e.g., AWS, Azure).
  • Proficiency with remote sensing software and techniques (e.g., Google Earth Engine, ENVI, machine learning, and AI)
  • Strong data science and analytical background.
  • Proficiency with programming languages (e.g., SQL, Python, JavaScript)
  • Commitment to impactful pedagogy for student educational experiences
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience teaching at the undergraduate level
  • Excellent problem-solving and oral and written communication skills;
  • Desire to collaborate in teaching to serve the mission of NC State;
  • Demonstrated expertise in urban sustainability, green infrastructure, or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching at the graduate level;
  • Experience with community-engaged or project-based learning related to urban sustainability;
  • Experience in the development of experiential learning or other innovative pedagogy;
  • Demonstrated experience in online teaching;
  • Demonstrated expertise in urban forestry.
