
Education/Biology - Science Educator
Job Description
Hope College is seeking a tenure-track faculty member who is a Science Education scholar, who will hold a joint appointment in the Biology and Education Departments, and who will teach science courses to Education majors, in addition to teaching courses in the Biology curriculum. The area of scholarship is open, but would be in science education research and involve undergraduate students, and ideally, PK-12 Biology teachers as well. The candidate will also participate in other departmental, college, and professional service, including college-wide STEM education initiatives, advising, and establishing a presence for Biology education.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include teaching Biology Education (PK-3, 3-6, and secondary methods) courses, and other Biology classes in his/her area of expertise. This could be in General Biology I or II (lecture or lab), or in another course as appropriate. We anticipate that this person would be performing collaborative research with students in Science Education and provide opportunities for them to engage in the professional communities of Science educators (NSTA, etc.) This will be a joint appointment between the Biology and Education Departments with teaching responsibilities in both departments and research predominantly in Biology Education or Science Education.
Qualifications
General qualifications include a minimum of 5 years of PK-12 teaching experience as a certified teacher, a record of excellence in teaching and scholarly/creative activity, a demonstrated commitment to inclusive practices, knowledge and skills in assessment, the application of technology in instruction, and effective interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate selected for this position will demonstrate expertise and knowledge of, as well as teaching experience with, science education, with an emphasis on Biology.
The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. in Science Education and an M.S. in Biology. Experience teaching in PK-12 education, particularly in Biology, Life Sciences, STEM, or science education, is desirable. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate an ability to combine teaching excellence with scholarly activity and should be committed to the character and goals of a liberal arts college with a Christian perspective.
